What’s Your Why?
I love thinking about what I’m doing with my life and I have a passion to help others discern the assignments they’re meant to carry out as well. While I want you to figure out what your purpose is, I need to warn you about something:
It is possible you could be doing the right thing in your life, but for the wrong reasons.
Why are you trying to be the best in your industry?
Why are you working at the company?
Why are you making the decisions you’re making in this season?
Why are you channeling your time, attention, and energy in the direction you are?
Here’s another way to ask the question:
What are you REALLY after?
Who or what is your ambition for? If it’s only for yourself, that’s not a big enough reason. A self-focused life ends up being a really small mission to live for. If you pursue success only for recognition. If you desire wealth just to make your life more comfortable and luxurious. If you only want to be a leader so you can boss people around.
You are called to make a difference in the lives of others.
I’m not asking you to throw away your ambition, but I would recommend you channel your ambition in these two directions: the glory of God and the good of others.
Here are a few things to steer your ambition in the right direction:
Remind yourself why you got into this in the first place.
Spend time imagining whose lives will be positively affected through your success.
Pray this prayer daily - God, may the good things I do bring you glory and help me serve others.
I spend an entire chapter on the topic of ambition in Bring It Out. I can’t believe it comes out in less than 2 weeks. I’d love for you to preorder it and spread the word to as many people as possible. Here’s the link where you can get your copy: Bring It Out by Ben Pilgreen.
Much Love,
