Picking Up Your Dreams
A common question we ask children is this one - What do you want to be when you grow up? Can you go back and remember how you answered this question when you were a child? Did you want to be a fireman or a doctor or an athlete?
We all know what it’s like to have had dreams in the past, but what about the present? Do you still have dreams, things that you would love to see take place in your life? Places you would love to go? People you would love to meet? Experiences you want to engage in? Work that you would love to get to do?
There are a number of things that caused us to set down our dreams, but most of us make this one discovery that has kept us from dreaming like we used to: We realize that we cannot actually be whoever we want to be and we cannot actually do whatever we want to do.
Don’t worry; I’m not going to try and sell you on the idea that anything is possible for you. But I do believe this - way more is possible than what you think at this moment. You can lose the weight you’ve convinced yourself will always be with you. You can have thriving relationships, even if people have broken your trust in the past. You can have a different job than the one that is currently boring you to death.
Here’s another leading cause for us setting down our dreams - We tend to give up on our dreams when they don’t come true by the time we thought they would.
The book of Genesis tells us about a man named Joseph, who God gave an incredible dream to when he was only 17. The vision wasn’t completely clear, but Joseph knew he’d have a position of influence and that his own brothers would bow down to him. Unfortunately for him, things got bad quickly following this dream. His brothers hated him and sold him into slavery. Joseph does a great job as a servant, but gets accused of doing something he didn’t. This lands him in jail.
It’s so easy to give up on our dreams when all we can see is the opposite of what we were hoping to see. But 13 years after his dream, Joseph ends up second in power over all of Egypt. I don’t know what the dream is that you set down, but what would it look like to pick it up today?
Is there an old dream you need to ask God to resurrect in your heart?
Is there a new dream you should give yourself permission to pursue?
One of the best ways to hold onto a dream is to attach the word YET to your faith. I don’t have the job I dream of YET. I don’t have the marriage that I dream of YET. I don’t have the influence I dream of YET.
One of the reasons I’ve written Bring It Out is so you can reclaim your old dreams and start dreaming new ones. The book releases in 4 weeks and I’d love for you to preorder and join our launch team - https://www.benpilgreen.com/launchteam. Thanks for helping me get this message out to as many people as possible.
