Who’s Working on You?
I’m guessing there are a number of people who are counting on you to help them out. This is a good thing; we were put here on earth to make a difference and to serve others. And this probably means that you are a leader in your home or workplace or church or some other organization.
I love that you are taking responsibility for other humans, but who is taking responsibility for you? Who is working on you?
I play the leader role in almost 100% of my relationships. I have a desire to lead my wife. We both take responsibility for taking care of our children. As the lead pastor of Epic Church, my role is to shepherd our church community. This also means that I’m the point leader for our staff team. When I coach church and business leaders, I am the helper in these relationships.
While I feel called to play this role in the lives of so many others, I really need some people playing this role in my life. And so do you! I want you to think about having a group of people who are working on you, as you seek to lead so many others. Here are some helpful categories:
Wisdom Table. I believe this is the most important table in your entire life. I actually have four chapters on this concept in my soon to be released book, Bring It Out. For now, think about the areas in your life where you need wisdom beyond what you currently possess. Begin taking steps to assemble your wisdom table.
Mentors. It’s probable that you play the “mentor” role in the lives of others, but who is playing this role in your life? Find someone who is further along than you, preferably with a similar calling that you have in life. You don’t have to ask them to mentor you, at least not right away. Simply ask them for a meeting and do it when and where it is convenient for them.
Coaches. There are so many books that have shaped my life and leadership. I’ve also had the privilege of attending conferences that gave me insights I still use every month. But there is nothing that has formed me more as a leader than having coaches. Books and conferences give you the general principles. A coach works with you personally on the specific things you alone are working through in your life. Though I have limited availability, you can find out more about the coaching I do here: https://www.benpilgreen.com/coaching.
Therapists and Spiritual Directors. These are professionals who can offer you a safe space to process your life and leadership. My wife and I met with our therapist a couple of weeks ago. He was able to unlock things we could not see on our own. The insight we received just in that hour changed so much about how we are now choosing to live.
As you think about the work you’ve been called to do, please engage a team who will work on you. Because you care so much about your soul and the work you’ve been put on this earth to do, what is one action step you can take today to build this team?
