Choosing Your Guides
Two months ago, I had the privilege of traveling to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for a board meeting. There was an afternoon when each of us had to decide between two fun outings. We could go on a scenic boat cruise or we could go whitewater rafting. Which would you have chosen? I knew that one option would produce a calm experience, while the other one would be exhilarating.
I chose the more adventurous path. One of the things I write about in Bring It Out is how all of us get to choose the path we’ll take with our lives. It is so tempting to want to take the familiar or easier path. But what if the path of adventure is where real life is found? What if choosing the path of familiarity and comfort causes us to miss out on the life we were meant for?
If you’re going to choose to step into everything you were created for, you’ll need some people around your wisdom table who can lead you there. While my friends and I were excited for our whitewater adventure, we were also grateful to have an experienced guide taking us down the river. The only way you can fully step into the life you’re made for is to have some experienced guides leading you there.
3 Criteria for Choosing Your Guides
1. Choose a guide who has experience in who you want to become and what you feel called to do.
2. Choose a guide who can help you identify and overcome the obstacles in the way.
3. Choose a guide who cares enough about you to tell you the truth.
I expound much more on how to do this in “The Wisdom Table” section of Bring It Out. I’m also speaking on concepts like this to businesses and churches.
